Had I seen the Swedish action film Snabba Cash before speaking to the film’s director Daniel Espinosa, I would have known what to expect from both him and his new film; Safe House is one heck of a wild ride. It stars Ryan Reynolds as Matt Weston, a young CIA agent stuck babysitting a safe house. Matt’s desperate to get out in the field as a case agent, but the problem is, they won’t hire him until he gets some experience and there’s no experience to be had in the safe house. Well, that is until Matt gets a high-level houseguest, the CIA’s most notorious traitor, Tobin Frost (Denzel Washington). However, even then, it’s Daniel Kiefer (Robert Patrick) and his men that take over. It isn’t until a group of armed men barrel into the safe house unleashing a barrage of bullets that Matt’s “experience” really begins, as now he’s the only one left to bring Frost safely into CIA custody.

You know the clichéd phrase, “you’ve got to see it to believe it?” That’s certainly the case with Safe House. It’s one thing to kick off the production with a solid script, but a guy like Espinosa is a necessity when it comes to bringing the piece to life the right way. As a director, Espinosa doesn’t hold back in the least, casting the roles as he sees fit, designing car chase sequences even though he doesn’t drive himself and even getting into the wheel well to catch the action.

His methods are both unique and fueled by passion, and that turns Safe Houseinto a thrilling and gripping ride, one you really do have to see to believe. Give the film a go for yourself when it arrives on February 10th and, in the meantime, get a taste of what it was like to bring David Guggenheim’s script to life straight from Espinosa himself in this video interview.

Washington plays rogue CIA agent Tobin Frost. After staying off the radar for nearly a decade, Frost pops up in Cape Town and is brought to Matt Weston’s (Reynolds) safe house for debriefing. Having merely babysat the facility month after month, Weston’s a bit of a rookie, so having a high profile criminal like Frost in his safe house, is an unnerving experience. And that’s before the mercenaries ambush the location, killing everyone inside and making Weston, Frost’s only chance of survival.

In honor of Safe House’s February 10th release, Washington and Reynolds came to New York City for a press conference. The duo discussed the entire process from studying up for their roles to shooting their particularly gritty fight sequences as well as a disturbing and very real waterboarding scene. Read about that and much more in the interview below.

According to Ryan Reynolds, “Daniel’s a guy you want to buy stock in,” and after seeing Safe House, I’d have to agree. Safe House is director Daniel Espinosa’s fourth feature, but his very first American film.

It stars Reynolds as Matt Weston, a young CIA agent assigned to a Cape Town safe house, which basically equates to a glorified babysitting job. He reports to his post, listens to some music, throws a ball against a wall and goes home. Sounds like a relaxing day, but not for a guy who’s itching to become a CIA case agent. No experience? No case agent gig. Matt’s luck changes, for better or worse, when the infamous CIA traitor Tobin Frost (Denzel Washington) walks through his door. As if it weren’t enough pressure having Frost as his houseguest, Matt’s safe house is ambushed and he becomes the only person left that can bring Frost safely into custody.

After the release of Snabba Cash (Easy Money), scripts began to roll right in for Espinosa. While he knew Safe House was the one for him, it still needed about a year’s worth of work, however, soon enough, that load wasn’t entirely on him, as Washington and Reynolds boarded the project. Not a bad leading duo for your first American feature, huh?

With the February 10th release of Safe House right around the corner, Espinosa came to New York City for a press conference and dished on the details of the entire process from locking his leads, to working in Cape Town and more. Check it all out in the interview below.

After catching a disaster film, my family always gets a laugh out of trying to figure out exactly what each of us would do in a time of crisis and I’m proud to say that the odds are generally on me to survive. However, if I ever found myself in the situation presented in Perfect Sense, I might just spare myself the stress and put an end to it before my time is really up. Then again, that probably has to do with the bleak and disheartening tone of the film more than anything.

Eva Green stars as Susan, a scientist living right near the restaurant where Ewan McGregor’s Michael is head chef. A little Romeo and Juliet-esque flirting ensues and they fall for each other. However, their intense passion for one another is somewhat tainted when the world is hit by a virus that causes people to lose their senses one by one. The first to go is smell and while it’s a sad thing to lose, the world recovers. When taste slips away, things get tougher, but people adapt, Michael altering his menu accordingly, putting more emphasis on texture rather than aiming to please a person’s palate.

That’s about it in the synopsis department because, well, you can probably figure out where it goes from there. Perfect Sense packs a particularly intriguing and disturbing core concept, but doesn’t really do much with it. The film is a one-way road to darkness. The lead character is a scientist and yet the effort to cure this disease is nearly nonexistent, which leaves the viewer with nothing to root for. Lacking even the slightest bit of hope, Perfect Sense is somewhat like watching someone with a terminal illness just slip away.

Well, actually there’s a chance you have already met this young actor as he does have a pair of shorts and features on his resume, but his upcoming release, Chronicle, is most certainly of a higher power.

The film begins from Andrew’s (Dane DeHaan) perspective, as he recently decides it’s time to pick up a camera and document his daily life. Russell comes in as Matt, Andrew’s cousin and the guy responsible for keeping Andrew from completely falling off the social ladder. Matt’s not a big fan of Andrew’s new hobby, but the camera comes in handy when Andrew, Matt and Steve (Michael B. Jordan) stumble upon a mysterious hole in the woods during a party and even more so when their little adventure leaves them with incredible superpowers.

Who doesn’t dream of acquiring superpowers? Well, seeing as that’s impossible, the next best thing is to get to play a superhero on the big screen. Sure, the stunts and movie magic were a blast for Russell, but while chatting Chronicle with him, he seems to have appreciated working with such talented and passionate filmmakers more than anything. Check out everything Russell had to say about landing his role, working with director Josh Trank and more in the interview below and be sure to catch Chronicle in theaters this weekend.

Michael B. Jordan has certainly kept busy over the years. He had The Wire back in 2002, then it was on to All My Children for nearly four years after which he moved over to The Assistants and then hit Friday Night Lights and Parenthood. When did this guy have time to make two movies? Jordan had a part in the January 20th release Red Tails and now he’s returning to the big screen yet again in Josh Trank’s Chronicle.

Jordan stars as Steve Montgomery, the quintessential big man on campus. He’s a star athlete, running for class president and is a favorite amongst the ladies. However, one night, Steve winds up adding another skill to his resume – superpowers. When Steve and Matt (Alex Russell) stumble upon a bizarrely deep hole in the woods during a party, they recruit Matt’s cousin Andrew (Dane DeHaan) to bring his camera and film what happens when they go inside – but the bigger deal is what they end up filming after.

As a self-proclaimed comic book nerd, playing a super powered teen is a dream come true for Jordan. Sure it wasn’t easy working within the found footage realm, which required him to be on his toes for particularly long takes, but having the ability to fly and move cars with his mind– or at least seem like he could– made it worth it.

In advance of Chronicle’s February 3rd debut, Jordan took the time to run through the whole procedure from landing the role and working with a rising young cast and crew to manning up for his stunts. Check it all out in the interview below.

Shortly after taking his final bow as Harry Potter in The Deathly Hallows – Part 2, Radcliffe is back on the big screen in The Woman in Black.

Radcliffe leads as Arthur Kipps, a young father who’s still reeling from his wife’s passing during childbirth. Now a solo parent, Arthur needs to support his son and that means sorting out the legal affairs of the recently deceased owner of the secluded Eel Marsh House. However, upon arriving in town, Arthur comes to learn that this gig is going to be a tough one, not only because the home is overflowing with paperwork, but also because the house isn’t as empty as he was led to believe.

On the occasion of The Woman in Black’s February 3rd release, Radcliffe sat down to talk all about the transition from Potter to horror, his own unease with the genre, the preparation necessary for embodying such a troubled character and much more. Check it all out in the interview below.

Seriously? I’d like to bet most wouldn’t suit up like Spider-Man and clean the streets of crime. Well, not initially at least. High school-aged or not, most of us would probably partake in the shenanigans the leading trio of Chronicle enjoy. But that’s not to say this novel superhero flick is all fun and games. In fact, it boasts a great deal of depth, intertwining the out-of-this-world action with some very real troubling issues.

Andrew (Dane DeHaan) is a bit of an outcast and makes himself even more socially awkward by buying a video camera and documenting his entire life. Camera in tow, Andrew tags along with his cousin Matt (Alex Russell) to a big school party out in the middle of nowhere. During a lonesome sulking session, Matt and the big man on campus, Steve Montgomery (Michael B. Jordan), convince Andrew to film this crazy thing they found, a massive hole out in the woods. Then, they opt to take it one step further, going down into the hole and through the passage.

Cut to a new day. Andrew, Matt and Steve are together again, but this time, they’re not just partaking in your average after school activities; they’re throwing baseballs at each other – with their minds. Turns out, whatever happened down in that hole left the boys with superhero-like powers. But this isn’t Peter Parker, Clark Kent and Bruce Wayne we’re talking about. These are teenagers and they’re looking to have some fun with their new abilities. However, a few harmless pranks later, they come to realize that there’s a breaking point and if they don’t learn to control their growing powers, they could really hurt someone.

Well, get ready because The Innkeepers uses them all. Eerie tracking shots, spooky noises and an unoriginal story, but, oddly enough, writer-director Ti West manages to put enough of his authorial expressivity on the piece to deliver something that may not feel fresh, but is still refreshingly nostalgic.

It’s the Yankee Pedlar Inn’s last days in business and Claire and Luke (Sara Paxton and Pat Healy) are the only two employees left, assigned to keep the facility running until closing day. It’s not as tough as it sounds though. The entire third floor of the hotel has already been sealed off and there’s only two guests on the second floor.

Regardless, the duo agrees to bunk down at the hotel for the final weekend and opt to keep themselves busy with Luke’s hobby, a website dedicated to paranormal activity recordings. Convinced the Yankee Pedlar is haunted, they use an EVP recording device to catch the spirit of Madelyn O’Malley in action, a former guest who killed herself when her fiancé split on their wedding day.

Make way for Joey King. At just 12-years-old, the young actress has already starred in her own feature film, Ramona and Beezus, and tacked on about eight other big screen titles to her resume. But, of course, it’s not just about lengthening your list of screen credits, but lengthening that list with films of quality and boy does King have some potential hits on the way.

Next out of the gate for King will be the third installment of Christopher Nolan’s Batman series, The Dark Knight Rises. Then, on March 8th, 2013, King will grace the screen as China Girl in Sam Raimi’s Oz: The Great and Powerful. But wait; there’s more! King also snagged her very first series regular role for NBC’s upcoming romantic comedy Bent.

See what I mean? We’ve got a hefty dose of King on the way! But, even with all this work to get to, King still makes time for her family and a good deal of charitable causes, too. Apparently, there’s near to nothing King can’t do – with her pig Jay Jay by her side, of course. It isn’t time to chat about The Dark Knight Rises or Oz: The Great and Powerful just yet, but check out everything else on King’s plate in the interview below.
