I’ve done a lot of interviews, but never once has the interviewee beat me to the first question. Not only did Hot Tub Time Machine director Steve Pink throw a question my way before I could ask him one, but he asked me something totally predictable and simplistic, yet a question that caught me completely off guard. He wanted to know what I thought about his movie.
When you’re talking about a project that involves four guys time traveling back to the 80s via hot tub, you’d think there isn’t much to discuss except the pure instantly of the situation. But, no, Hot Tub Time Machine has much more to it than absurdity and insanely hilarious gags. Of course, there’s a lot of that, but HTTM has a little something extra to offer, an appealing plot.
Even with a talented group consisting of John Cusack, Rob Corddry, Craig Robinson and Clark Duke driving the film, it’s Pink’s fine tuning that makes Hot Tub Time Machine more pleasurable than its comical competition. Committing to a role like Chloe is no easy decision, particularly for an actress who is well known for being part of comical and family-friendly films. In
Hot Tub Time Machine may be a film about four guys going back in time via hot tub, but no buddy comedy is complete without some female counterparts to humanize the raucous insanity. In this case those ladies are April and Kelly, and they’re played by Lizzy Caplan and Collette Wolfe.
It’s fun to see robots blowing each other up, get a cheap scare from a horror movie or a good laugh out of a comedy, but no sensation can compare to that of a dissonant drama with the power to feel real. Julianne Moore and Amanda Seyfried provide Erin Cressida Wilson’s script with an intense breath of authenticity guaranteeing you feel the pain inflicted upon their characters by the plot’s extreme circumstances. Making Chloe even more potent, those conditions are especially unnerving.
Is there anything Julianne Moore can’t do? She’s starred in a soap opera, done some comedy, a little action and pushed the limits with a number of fairly controversial roles. Moore’s character in Chloe falls into the latter category. Catherine is in the middle of her life and struggling as the things she once loved are losing their vibrancy, particularly her marriage.
In the words of MTV‘s “True Life,” you think you know Amanda Seyfried as an actress, but you have no idea. This reference is particularly fitting considering the channel’s target audience is likely the one to rush to see anything with Seyfried’s name attached. But brace yourselves; you’ve likely seen her as the blond bombshell with ‘ESPN,’ Karen, in Mean Girls, Meryl Streep’s bubbly daughter Sophie in Mamma Mia! or, more recently, as the innocent nerd trying to deal with her demonic best friend in Jennifer’s Body, but you’ve never seen her like this.
