Interview: Steve Pink (One-on-One)

I’ve done a lot of interviews, but never once has the interviewee beat me to the first question. Not only did Hot Tub Time Machine director Steve Pink throw a question my way before I could ask him one, but he asked me something totally predictable and simplistic, yet a question that caught me completely off guard. He wanted to know what I thought about his movie.

When you’re talking about a project that involves four guys time traveling back to the 80s via hot tub, you’d think there isn’t much to discuss except the pure instantly of the situation. But, no, Hot Tub Time Machine has much more to it than absurdity and insanely hilarious gags. Of course, there’s a lot of that, but HTTM has a little something extra to offer, an appealing plot.

Even with a talented group consisting of John Cusack, Rob Corddry, Craig Robinson and Clark Duke driving the film, it’s Pink’s fine tuning that makes Hot Tub Time Machine more pleasurable than its comical competition. Check out what happened when Pink put me on the spot and what he had to say about his longstanding association with Cusack, how he went about choosing 80s references to incorporate and his Dirty Rotten plan for the future.

Interview: Hot Tub Time Machine’s Crispin Glover

I leaned a number of new things about Crispin Glover while at the Hot Tub Time Machine junket in Lake Tahoe. First off, he’s a successful commercial actor, but also pursuing some personal passion projects on the side. Secondly, the guy is poised to the max. Lastly, damn, Glover’s got gorgeous hair.

There’s a good chance you didn’t even know Glover was in Hot Tub Time Machine. John Cusack, Rob Corddry, Clark Duke and Craig Robinson are featured on the posters and in the trailers, but it’s Glover who’s got one of the most memorable running gags throughout the film. He plays Phil, the hotel bellhop who escorts the gang to their room and the same guy who did so back in 1986. When we meet Phil at the beginning of the film, he’s missing a little something, an arm. But after some hot tub time traveling, we meet the 1986 version of Phil and he’s fully limbed. You know what that means; he’s eventually losing that arm.

Not only did Glover dish on the physicality of his role, but he also addressed his involvement in another little time travel film, Back to the Future. Then there are Glover’s plans for the future. His dedication to use his mainstream work to finance his own films have led him to the Czech Republic where he’s building his own sets. Will It Is Mine be next on his agenda? Find out that and more below.

Interview: Hot Tub Time Machine Director Steve Pink

Steve Pink had his hands full on the set of Hot Tub Time Machine, in a good way. Not only was he working with a brilliant concept – four guys traveling back in time via hot tub – but he also had four downright hilarious lead actors at his disposal. Pink and John Cusack go way back and share a production company called New Crime Productions. By uniting his buddy and business partner with the likes of Craig Robinson, Rob Corddry and Clark Duke, then tossing in some Chernobyl, booze, a squirrel and, of course, a hot tub, Pink established a recipe for comedic hilarity.

But that’s not even the least of it. Pink also had a fantastic list of supporting cast members including Crispin Glover, Chevy Chase and, his leading ladies, Collette Wolfe and Lizzy Caplan. Top that all off with a set saturated with 80s nostalgia and you’ve got a seriously entertaining throwback.

The guy behind Accepted is back and with an R-rated vengeance nonetheless. Who knew a notch up on the MPAA ratings scale could make such a difference? And that’s coming from someone who truly enjoyed Accepted. Pink delivers big time with Hot Tub Time Machine. Between the movie, this roundtable, some one-on-one time and a chance to party with Pink at the junket in Lake Tahoe, I’m eager to see what the director has up his sleeve for the future. In the meantime, I’ll be going for a second helping of HTTM.

Interview: Chloe’s Amanda Seyfried

Committing to a role like Chloe is no easy decision, particularly for an actress who is well known for being part of comical and family-friendly films. In Chloe, Amanda Seyfried stars as the titular character, a young prostitute hired by an older woman (Julianne Moore) to tempt her husband (Liam Neeson) to reveal whether or not he has extramarital tendencies.

Nothing like Karen from Mean Girls, Sophie from Mamma Mia! , Sarah from Big Love or Needy from Jennifer’s Body, right? Well, that’s kind of the point. Seyfried is well aware of the inclination of young actresses to take on roles that are merely versions of themselves and was thrilled about the opportunity to color outside of the lines–way outside the lines.

But even while taking some risks, Seyfried certainly has her head on straight. She admits to taking her work home with her, Mamma Mia! co-star Dominic Cooper in particular, but she’s determined to follow in the footsteps of some of her iconic co-stars, like Moore and Meryl Streep, in an effort to establish herself as a capable and talented actress. Take a look at what Seyfried had to say about being an up-and-comer in a profession overflowing with expectations, her experience working with director Atom Egoyan, and more.

Interview: Hot Tub Time Machine’s Lizzy Caplan and Collette Wolfe

Hot Tub Time Machine may be a film about four guys going back in time via hot tub, but no buddy comedy is complete without some female counterparts to humanize the raucous insanity. In this case those ladies are April and Kelly, and they’re played by Lizzy Caplan and Collette Wolfe.

Way back when, Adam (John Cusack) was really into a girl who didn’t share his feelings. Lucky for him, April, a music reporter following the band Poison, is there to pick up the pieces. Kelly’s situation isn’t as sweet. She has a rather unconventional relationship with Lou (Rob Corddry). In the midst of heaps of hatred and insults, the two actually share a connection.

Wolfe is certainly part of the comedy far more than Caplan, but both actresses have their times to shine and manage to reveal Adam and Lou’s sensitive sides. Check out what Wolfe had to say about her sexy time with Corddry and Caplan about her passion to see more female-driven comedies.

Review: Chloe

It’s fun to see robots blowing each other up, get a cheap scare from a horror movie or a good laugh out of a comedy, but no sensation can compare to that of a dissonant drama with the power to feel real. Julianne Moore and Amanda Seyfried provide Erin Cressida Wilson’s script with an intense breath of authenticity guaranteeing you feel the pain inflicted upon their characters by the plot’s extreme circumstances. Making Chloe even more potent, those conditions are especially unnerving.

Catherine (Julianne Moore) has a pleasant life. Her son’s (Max Thieriot) in the midst of a rebellious stage, but otherwise, thing are going quite well. She lives in a beautiful home and has a successful gynecological practice. But that all changes when her husband (Liam Neeson) ‘misses’ his flight home, causing her to suspect he’s cheating on him. A chance encounter with a call girl, Chloe (Amanda Seyfried), leads her to make an arrangement for Chloe to meet with David in order to see if he’s as dubious as she suspects.

Interview: Chloe’s Julianne Moore

Is there anything Julianne Moore can’t do? She’s starred in a soap opera, done some comedy, a little action and pushed the limits with a number of fairly controversial roles. Moore’s character in Chloe falls into the latter category. Catherine is in the middle of her life and struggling as the things she once loved are losing their vibrancy, particularly her marriage.

When she’s almost sure her husband, David, (Liam Neeson) is cheating on her, she makes a deal with a young prostitute named Chloe (Amanda Seyfried). Chloe attempts to seduce David on several occasions and reports back to Catherine with the details. Catherine quickly becomes conflicted eager to end the arrangement, but caught in the middle of the troubling discoveries and her own atypical intrigue.

Sounds like a classic story of amour, right? Okay, the prostitute thing may push Chloe into more divisive territory, but the element that solidifies it as a film that could suffer from backlash or gain admiration, depending on your taste in this type of material, is the girl-on-girl action. Yes, if you know just one thing about Chloe, it’s probably that it involves Moore and Seyfried getting a little naughty.

Not sure how you feel about that? Perhaps Moore can elucidate on that issue more eloquently than I have. Check out what Moore had to say about her moment with Seyfried, as well as her experience working with Neeson and director Atom Egoyan.

Interview: Amanda Seyfried is Chloe

In the words of MTV‘s “True Life,” you think you know Amanda Seyfried as an actress, but you have no idea. This reference is particularly fitting considering the channel’s target audience is likely the one to rush to see anything with Seyfried’s name attached. But brace yourselves; you’ve likely seen her as the blond bombshell with ‘ESPN,’ Karen, in Mean Girls, Meryl Streep’s bubbly daughter Sophie in Mamma Mia! or, more recently, as the innocent nerd trying to deal with her demonic best friend in Jennifer’s Body, but you’ve never seen her like this.

In Chloe, Seyfried plays the titular character, a young prostitute who delves into an unconventional side of the business when she strikes a deal with an older woman named Catherine (Julianne Moore). Catherine suspects her husband (Liam Neeson) is cheating on her and hires Chloe to taunt him so she can see if he’ll nibble at the bait. But what Catherine doesn’t know is that there’s far more to Chloe than operating a business of questionable integrity. In fact, Chloe’s personal integrity is more suspect than her line of work.

ComingSoon.net had the opportunity to sit down with Seyfried and hash out the details of the role and get her feelings about having to share a particularly sensual moment with Moore. As her filmography grows, skyrocketing her to a life of fame and fortune, Seyfried is just trying to do what she can, keep her films fresh, put priorities in their place and has her new puppy Finn by her side to see her through it all.

Interview: Hot Tub Time Machine’s Rob Corddry, Craig Robinson and Clark Duke

At first I was disappointed that John Cusack wasn’t able to attend the Hot Tub Time Machine junket out in Lake Tahoe. But after trying to transcribe the roundtable interview with the film’s other three stars, Clark Duke, Rob Corddry and Craig Robinson, one less hot tub time traveler was a blessing.

The four play a group of guys who take a trip to their favorite 80s getaway, Kodiak Valley. The problem is, their partying paradise isn’t quite the same as it was way back when. They throw a private party of their own, which lands the quartet in the hot tub. A little booze, Chernobly and a squirrel later, they end up back in 1986. Yes, it’s as crazy as it sounds.

Rather than writing ‘[Laugh]’ after each comment, I’ll just leave it to you to insert them wherever and whenever you’d like. The guys did provide a number of interesting facts about the film, but, for the most part, this was practically a stand up – er, sitting down comedy show. If you’re looking to get a taste of the comical hilarity this movie

Interview: Hot Tub Time Machine’s Clark Duke

Clark who? Clarke Duke, a name you should get to know. He played Lance in Sex Drive and is about to get to work on his fourth season ofGreek as Dale. If you haven’t seen either, odds are, you have no idea who the guy is. Well, not only is he in the highly anticipated upcoming superhero movie Kick-Ass, but he also stars alongside Rob Corddry, John Cusack and Craig Robinson in Hot Tub Time Machine.

Duke plays Jacob, one of four guys who time travel via hot tub back to the 80s. Of the group, Jacob is the only one who wasn’t alive in 1986 and is the sole person to retain some sense after the trip and acknowledge the necessity to eventually return home to modern times. Jacob is constantly taunted by his older buddies, particularly by Corddry’s character, the cynical and foul-mouthed Lou.

Check out my video interview with Duke during which he discusses working with his hilarious co-stars, his significant amount of comedic input and his high hopes for Kick-Assas well as potential for a sequel.
