‘ParaNorman’ and Cheesy Sports Stories Lead the Best and Worst Movie Promos of the Week

You know what’s better than a week’s worth of promotional material with three pieces deserving Best Stuff honors? Even more than three that deliver big time.

Sure, there’s some concern that Man of Steel might end up being a typical Zack Snyder production with all mesmerizing visuals and little in the story department, but even if that’s the case it still makes for two impressive trailers. We’ve also got a nice collection of material fromThe Bourne Legacy, with some clips to be exact. While the film is geared towards folks looking for a hefty dose of action, the talk-heavy “Sin Eater” and “Name” clips certainly resonate more than the other snippets we’ve seen thus far. We’ve also got a clip from Step Up Revolution, and in an obvious and appropriate move, the film’s marketing team dishes out one of the film’s prime mass-dance sequences.

Want to ditch the action and dancing in exchange for a laugh? I’m almost embarrassed to admit it, but the potty humor in this restricted clip for The Campaign is actually kind of hilarious. And while this outtake reel for The Watch is more of a montage of scenes from the film than actual outtakes, some of it is worth a watch as Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Jonah Hill and my new favorite, Richard Ayoade, certainly know how to earn an unscripted laugh.

Review: The Watch

Original plots don’t even seem to do the trick anymore. Whether the movie’s about an alien invasion, a hotel robbery, babysitting bad kids or a disastrous couples retreat, we wind up with a tiresome tone and jokes that feel awfully familiar. Lucky for Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn and Jonah Hill, their standard is slightly elevated by a stellar somewhat new find, Richard Ayoade.

Evan (Stiller) loves starting up local clubs. In fact, he doesn’t really have many friends, only the folks that join his groups and his employees at Costco. When his late night security guard is killed at the store, Evan takes it upon himself to track down his murderer by starting a neighborhood watch. When the first neighborhood watch meeting arrives, Evan is ready to go with pamphlets and a map of the town, but his only three members, Bob (Vince Vaughn) the intense yet loving father, Franklin (Jonah Hill) the police officer wannabe and the seemingly normal Jamarcus (Richard Ayoade) who enjoys a certain naughty fantasy would much rather party at Bob’s than take the neighborhood watch seriously with Evan.

However, when the guys come across some mysterious green goo that leads them to an out-of-this-world silver ball with the power to blow cows away, the fact that aliens have invaded their quaint little town of Glenview is undeniable. When the cops refuse to believe that the town is under attack, Evan, Bob, Franklin and Jamarcus have no choice but to man up, guzzle some beers and protect Glenview from the aliens themselves.

Movie Characters We Wish Were Real

We’ve all gone to the movies at some point and walked away wishing a particular character was real. What if someone like Batman were there to fight crime, or what if all our toys magically came to life and went on adventures while we slept at night?

Ruby Sparks (in limited release this weekend) stars Paul Dano as Calvin, a struggling writer whose big breakthrough arrives when one of his characters (played by Zoe Kazan) comes to life. In an effort to have some fun with that plot, we took a look at some big-screen characters capable of making the real world a better place, or at the very least a little bit cooler.

Tony Stark (Iron Man)

Who wouldn’t want to live in a world where superheroes really do exist? Spider-Man and Superman would be great, but do they come with a multibillion-dollar corporation like Stark Industries? In addition to getting a guy capable of zipping around the world at a moment’s notice, annihilating enemies with the palms of his hands and exhibiting incredible strength, should Iron Man become the real deal, in comes a technology company with seemingly endless resources that is responsible for developing weapon and defense products of superhuman quality.

‘The Master’ and ‘Man of Steel’ Lead Our Best and Worst Movie Promos of the Week

How about some movie clips to lead you into the weekend? Not only did a pair drop for bothThe Bourne Legacy and Total Recall, but we’ve also got scenes from End of Watch and Silent Hill: Revelation 3D, too.

Total Recall definitely trumps the lot, delivering two clips that exhibit a strong connection to the 1990 film, but also confirm we are desperately in need of an upgrade. Click here to check out the first clip featuring a futuristic video chat between Bryan Cranston and Kate Beckinsale, and here to see Beckinsale on the hunt for Colin Farrell and Jessica Biel. The pieces from The Bourne Legacy look solid as well, but the motorcycle chase scene andescape from the cops aren’t as effective as they likely are in context.

On the non-summer blockbuster level, we’ve got a little something from the September 28threlease End of Watch highlighting one of the film’s prime assets, the chemistry between Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña. We go full horror with a clip from one of this year’s Halloween releases, Silent Hill: Revelation 3D. Based on this material, it looks as though we’ll get our fix of those monster-like characters, but the question still remains, will Revelation have a fully realized story to go along with the scares?

Review: The Dark Knight Rises

Hype is great, especially with this industry, but if you’re going to play the role of the most anticipated film of the summer, you’ve got your work cut out for you. And that’s on top of having to live up to an Academy Award winning predecessor.

After a brief look at Commissioner Gordon (Gary Oldman) speaking at Harvey Dent’s funeral, “The Dark Knight Rises” takes us eight years into the future. Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) is a recluse and Batman is nowhere to be found having been blamed for Dent’s murder, but, as Batman and Gordon hoped, the resulting Dent Act successfully keeps criminals at bay in Gotham City – that is until Bane (Tom Hardy) arrives.

Why not answer the big question right off the bat – does “The Dark Knight Rises” live up to the hype? Yes and no. What? You didn’t actually think it’d be a clear-cut answer, did you? Perhaps this little carrot diagram might help – “Batman Begins”

‘The Hunger Games’ Countdown: The Tributes Invade San Diego Comic-Con

Before diving into San Diego Comic-Con 2012, unless you were in a basement without reception or happened to be flying across the globe on a plane with no Wi-Fi, you’ve heard about the big Hunger Games: Catching Fire casting updates that dropped yesterday. We’ve got Christopher Plummer’s daughter, Amanda Plummer, on board to play Wiress and supposedly Sam Claflin and Tony Shalhoub are at the top of the list for the roles of Finnick and Beetee, respectively. You can read more about that as well as how close Melissa Leocame to snagging the role of Mags and the filmmakers’ plan to lock down directors for theMockingjay movies as soon as possible right here. Now for SDCC.

Isn’t it crazy to think about where we were this time last year? Everyone was scrambling to get ahold of a Mockingjay pin or teaser poster at the Lionsgate booth on the convention center floor. While that hasn’t really changed due to a constant influx of fans trying to get their hands on Hunger Games goodies near the booth, the film did get a Comic-Con upgrade. Alexander Ludwig (Cato), Dayo Okeniyi (Thresh), Amandla Stenberg (Rue), Jack Quaid (Marvel) and Willow Shields (Prim) all came to San Diego to meet the fans and sign some autographs.

To be honest, while watching fans line up for the signings, I was itching to jump into the masses and get one myself, but I had to be patient as I had a very special opportunity coming my way: The chance to sit down with all five cast members to discuss the film. Just the other day I posted a piece featuring Ludwig, Okeniyi, Stenberg, Quaid and Shields talking about their incredibly dedicated fans, experiences shooting The Hunger Games, top choices for the casting of Finnick and more. Today I bring you a little bonus, snippets from the interviews of the gang discussing their San Diego Comic-Con experiences and who they’d dress up as should they opt to hit the convention center in full costume. Who opted for the Hulk and Wonder Woman? The answer might surprise you …

Comic-Con 2012: Our Most Anticipated Events

The first rule of San Diego Comic-Con is that there’s absolutely no way to get to everything. The second rule of San Diego Comic-Con (or SDCC) is … try to get to everything. And we here at Movies.com will attempt to do just that, or at the very least bring back a taste of the big events everyone will be talking about come this time next week.

What are some of those events, and what should you expect from our coverage? Click through to find out what we’re looking forward to most as the country’s biggest geek-friendly convention prepares to infiltrate our nerdy hearts later this week.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2

Thursday 12:45 – 1:45 in Hall H

The non-Twihards might resent this, but what bigger way to open San Diego Comic-Con 2012 than with a panel for the final Twilight movie? The very first film to grace comic-con’s legendary Hall H will be the final installment of The Twilight Saga, Breaking Dawn – Part 2. This will (probably) be the last time Team Edward and Team Jacob supporters will get the chance to camp outside the San Diego Convention Center for a Twilight movie, so expect the crowd to be bigger than ever. Once the crowd files in and the panel actually begins, Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner, Peter Facinelli, Nikki Reed, Jackson Rathbone, Ashley Greene, Kellan Lutz and newcomer Mackenzie Foywill all be on hand, answering questions and previewing footage.

We throw it back to the good old shooting days when Hunger Games was still in production, fast forward to the present to get a sense of how starring in one of the biggest films of the year changed their personal lives and careers, and then jump ahead to do some Finnick Odair dream casting. SDCC 2012 Interview: Nikita’s Shane West

Before jumping into our interview with Shane West of “Nikita,” if you’re not fully caught up on the show, you’ve either got to heed this SPOILER ALERT or just embrace the influx of current story and character insight.

West is Michael, the object of Nikita’s (Maggie Q) affection. His feelings for her as well as his strong feelings against Percy (Xander Berkeley) compelled him to ditch Percy’s corrupt organization and adopt Nikita’s goal of putting an end to Division. The status of that goal? Complete. So now what? Run Division themselves, that’s what.

While promoting the show at San Diego Comic Con, West sat down to address season three’s trajectory, the flood of new villains, heading back to Division and more. Hear it all straight from West himself in the video below.

SDCC 2012 Interview: Nikita’s Maggie Q

Any new season brings a big shift for a show’s lead, but in the case of “Nikita,” the show’s third season takes Maggie Q’s character in an entirely new direction. Not caught up on both seasons of “Nikita?” It might be a good idea to mind this SPOILER ALERT as this interview is oozing with season one and two plot details as well as hints at what’s to come during round three.

For all of seasons one and two Nikita has had one goal and one goal only – take down Percy (Xander Berkeley) and bring down Division with him. Well, as of the finale of season two, mission accomplished, so Nikita’s going to have to switch gears completely.

What’s the outlook on life back at Division for Nikita? Who’s her next target? How has the experience changed for Q herself? Hear all about that and much more in the video interview below.
