The Best — and Worst — Movie Promos of the Week

The-Hobbit-IMAX-Midnight-Poster“True courage is about knowing not when to take a life, but when to spare one.” You can write that one down as one of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey‘s most memorable quotes, but the first clip from the highly anticipated December 14 release — as well as the latest behind-the-scenes postproduction video – were both trumped by four other pieces ofHobbit promotional material this week.

The Best Stuff

1. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey IMAX Midnight Posters: Even as someone who isn’t a diehard Hobbit/Lord of the Rings fan, I still want one of these to hang on my wall — the Gollum one to be exact. But the best part about this quartet of posters is that they’re for some of the franchise’s most loyal followers, the ones with midnight IMAX tickets.

Interview: The Walking Dead’s Dallas Roberts

It went from simply killing walkers to hoarding them in hopes your family would return to normal to treating them Michonne-style and using them as a defense tactic, but now we’ve got Milton and he’s putting the infected to use like never before.

After two seasons on the run, season 3 of The Walking Dead lets us settle in a bit at the community of Woodbury. Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and co. thought they had it good at Hershel’s farm and are now pleased with their prison, but Woodbury isn’t just a safe haven from walkers; it’s as close to the good ol’ days as it gets. There’s a community, parties, sporting events – albeit unconventional ones – and even a town scientist named Milton. As far as we know, the picture of Woodbury looks fairly good.

As a brand new character with no roots in Robert Kirkman’s comics, we know very little about Milton’s past. As it turns out, the actor who plays him, Dallas Roberts, doesn’t know all that much, either. Not only did Roberts jump into the role with zero backstory information from the show’s writers, he’s also quite well versed in the art of dodging probing questions. While Roberts was careful to steer clear of spoiler territory about Walking Dead season 3′s upcoming arc, he did have quite a bit to share in the way of how he came to join the cast, his approach to figuring out Milton as he plays him, his hopes to see Milton riding a Humvee armed with a 50 cal., and more.

Interview: Ex-Girlfriends Writer, Director And Star Alexander Poe

Are you toying with the idea of taking the plunge and making your first feature? In need of a little inspiration? Meet writer, director and actor Alexander Poe. After graduating from Columbia University’s Film MFA program, with good friends and talented peers by his side, Poe just went for it and made his first full feature, “Ex-Girlfriends.”

He stars in the film as Graham, a guy ridden with relationship woes. When his latest romance doesn’t pan out, Graham focuses back in on a former flame, Laura (Kristen Connolly). Trouble is, while trying to rekindle that relationship, Graham finds out that Laura has a boyfriend and that he’s cheating on Laura with Kate (Jennifer Carpenter), Graham’s ex-turned-friend.

Graham’s rocky romance attempts may have roots in Poe’s true experiences, but otherwise, Poe is doing pretty well! Not only did he manage to pull together the material, people and resources necessary for completing a feature film, but that film will be available on VOD on November 27th and can be seen theatrically at the Cinema Village in New York City starting November 28th. In honor of the big release, Poe took the time to sit down at one of the film’s shooting locations, The Brooklyneer, to talk about making the transition from film school shorts to a full feature, striking up a relationship with Jennifer Carpenter, putting a small budget to the best use possible and much more. Catch it all in the video interview below.

Review: Silver Linings Playbook

Writer-director David O. Russell excels, but his stars steal the show. Bradley Cooper makes for a charming and enigmatic lead, but Jennifer Lawrence steals his spotlight. While everyone involved in “Silver Linings Playbook” pushes the bar higher and higher, it’s Lawrence who’ll be the toughest to top.

After eight months in a psychiatric facility, Pat (Bradley Cooper) heads home to live with his mother and father (Jacki Weaver and Robert De Niro). Determined to get his wife back, Pat dedicates every waking hour to the pursuit, much to the chagrin of his father who desperately wants Pat to watch the Philadelphia Eagles games with him. Despite Pat’s persistence, a restraining order keeps him from making much progress. It isn’t until he meets the equally unsound Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence) that he finds a way around the court-mandated red tape – as long as he helps Tiffany out with her dance competition first.

“Silver Linings Playbook” is a romantic comedy with a profound amount of drama and depth, a slice of life yet an immensely satisfying story with a beginning, middle and end, it’s off-putting at times, but still the ultimate crowd pleaser. The film is like nothing you’ve seen before, fulfilling certain expectations and defying others, only to turn around and offer something you never saw coming.

Interview: The Normals’ Jess Weixler

Ever since “Teeth” hit Sundance back in 2007, actress Jess Weixler has been in the spotlight while also flying under the radar, choosing smaller, independent projects, letting her sink her teeth, no pun intended, into meatier roles and get the opportunity to work in the most appealing environments. Well, the abandoned mental hospital she shot “The Normals” is wasn’t particularly appealing, but after a major redesign courtesy of a top-notch art department, it was all beagles, mind games and a ton of mints.

Weixler stars as Gretchen, the sole female in a group of people opting to spend a couple of weeks at a drug testing facility to earn some quick cash – well, in addition to other activities. Gretchen follows the rules, taking her pills, giving blood and eating her meals as required, but in her free time, she enjoys taking advantage of being the only lady on team green, much to Billy’s (Bryan Greenberg) dismay.

“The Normals” already wrapped its run at the Cinema Village in New York City, but you can pop this little gem of a comedy whenever you’d like courtesy of iTunes, Amazon, Movies On Demand and more. In honor of the VOD release, I had the opportunity to chat with Weixler herself about life as a drug test subject, her hopes to make her directorial debut, our hair woes and more. Check it all out in the interview below.

The Best — and Worst — Movie Promos of the Week

The_Last_Stand_PostersNot out of your Turkey Day food coma just yet? Have no fear; I’ve sorted through all the hot new movie promotional material and picked out the delightfully riveting and laughably disastrous for you. Sit back, relax, sip some Alka-Seltzer and take a look.

The Best Stuff

1. This Is 40 Red-Band Featurette: Based on its promotional campaign, This Is 40 doesn’t look like comedy gold, but there’s something about the environment and characters that’s just wildly magnetizing. The film’s brand new red-band featurette is charming to the max, suggesting the full feature may really manage to earn that 134-minute running time.Warning: The following is NSFW. [via Yahoo]

Review: Red Dawn

The “Red Dawn” remake has had a cloud over its head ever since MGM’s financial difficulties, the last minute enemy nationality change and the long delayed release, however, as a proponent of the 1984 original and a true believer that the story had major remake potential, some hope prevailed. I’m allowed to be optimistically naïve every once in a while, right?

It’s a typical night in Spokane, Washington, Matt Eckert (Josh Peck) desperately trying to take down the opposing team in the final seconds of a high school football game. His tendency to take matters into his own hands and “cowboy” his way into the end zone doesn’t prove effective and the Wolverines lose the game, however, that’s the least of Matt’s worries. Later that night, the town goes black and early the next morning, Matt and his Marine brother, Jed (Chris Hemsworth), wake up to North Korean bombs, fighter planes and armed paratroopers. Matt and Jed take to the mountains and hunker down in their family cabin with a few other escapees, but soon come to realize that there’s no use in merely hiding out. They have to defend their friends, family and town.

The original “Red Dawn” certainly isn’t a masterpiece, but it packs enough of a punch to get you rooting for the Wolverines. The 2012 “Red Dawn” finds some similar success, but to a far lesser degree, as the material is far too manic and illogical to support any attempts at character development.

Interview: Alter Egos Writer-Director Jordan Galland

There’s nothing real about a guy who freezes his foes with a blue ray that shoots out of his hands – or at least as far as we know – but writer, director, producer Jordan Galland takes an exceedingly grounded approach to the life and world of superheroes in his latest feature, Alter Egos.

The film focuses on a guy named Fridge (Kris Lemche). Well, actually, his name is Brendan, but when his girlfriend becomes more drawn to Fridge, Brendan has a tough time shaking his alter-ego and ditching his costume for street clothes – not the greatest way to be walking around when the Superhero Corps no longer has the support of the government or the public. In the midst of his identity crisis and the Corps’ political meltdown, Fridge is assigned to complete a mission alongside C-Thru (Joey Kern) - one that becomes far more personal than Fridge could have ever imagined, forcing him to revaluate his place in society.

Alter Egos may be without crumbling buildings, epic battles and studio-sized visual effects, but that was never the superhero movie Galland intended to make. His budget may have increased from its original $50,000 plan, but Galland kept everything modest, working with good friends, affordable props, costumes and effects, and keeping his sights set on rewarding his cast and crew for their hard work by securing the film as wide a release as possible.

With Alter Egos due out on VOD November 20th, Galland recently took the time to run through the whole process of putting the movie together and seeing it through to the big release. Check out what he had to say about developing the idea forAlter Egos, dealing with costume mishaps, designing Fridge’s “freeze ray,” the possibility of an Alter Egos TV show and much more in the interview below.

MortalInstrumentsPosterThe Twilight Saga may be on its way out, but 2013 looks to be the year of the young adult book-to-film adaptation, and based on the promos that recently hit the Web it will finally be leaps and bounds beyond sparkly brooding vampires.

The Best Stuff

1. ABCs of Death Red-Band Trailer: This new red-band trailer for the anthology The ABCs of Death may not be for everyone, but it certainly has a little something for every breed of horror lover. Who knows what the full feature will amount to, but the way this piece is cut is infectious, offering up everything from vicious dogs to robots with tons of firepower to creepy kids and more, all fueled by outlandish scenarios, vibrant visuals and loads of brutality.Warning: this trailer is NSFW.
