The Best – and Worst – Movie Trailers of the Week

Cabin_Fever_Patient_Zero_ThumbWhen one trailer is essentially a copy and paste of a previous one minus a few joke swaps, it’s typically an instant pass for The Best and Worst Stuff. However, in the case of Jason Bateman’s directorial debut, Bad Words, it’s such a joy and pleasure to be back in that world with him and Rohan Chand that the material is actually a little more effective the second time around. But still, the film’s new green band promo is nearly a shot-for-shot duplicate of thered band one, so it’ll have to settle for an honorable mention and give other film trailers a shot.

The Best Stuff

1. Cabin Fever: Patient Zero

Admittedly, this one isn’t really deserving of the Best Stuff title, but it did manage to slip in due to the lack of competition. The cut from patient zero lockdown to obnoxious party time doesn’t work in the least, their situations don’t congeal well thereafter and those title cards are tacky to the max, but if you’re into the Cabin Fever series, it’s tough not to want more. Sure, a connection to the characters and a clearer sense of what’s at risk would have made this a stronger selling tool for non-fans, but for the rest, the tease of more flesh-eating virus carnage is all you need.

YA Movie Countdown: Why Fox 2000 Could Break New Young-Adult Ground with ‘SYLO’

Sylo_Book_CoverHave you had enough vampires, zombies, werewolves, supernatural-human romances and dystopian societies in the young adult book-to-film realm? You’re in luck: D.J. MacHale’s Sylo doesn’t have a single one of them.

WHAT IT’S ABOUT

Sylo is a tough one to describe because part of the appeal is that it’s a mystery through and through. None of the main characters know more than the reader, so each step of the way you’re putting the pieces together right along with them, making the scenario exceptionally suspenseful and engaging, and also making their discoveries particularly gratifying.

Three Creepy Stories the ‘Paranormal Activity’ Franchise Should Explore Next

Paranormal_Activity_The_Marked_Ones_PosterSince Paranormal Activity arrived in 2009, the plan seemed to be for the franchise to take Saw’s place and churn out a new installment each Halloween. Trouble is, even though Paranormal Activity 5 was announced and given an October 25, 2013 due date almost immediately after film four hit theaters, that didn’t end up happening.

In July of 2013, news broke that Paranormal Activity 5 was uprooted from that original release and plopped back down in January 2014. A move like that was alarming considering Paranormal Activity seemed to have been making the push to turn the films into a Halloween staple, but at the same time The Devil InsideTexas Chainsaw 3D and Mama all recently proved that January was prime time for horror. Well, it turns out, the Paranormal Activity series wants to reap the benefits of both debut dates.

The Most Disturbing Horror Movies

paranormal-activity-140106-520Why do people watch horror movies? There are many answers to that question, but I go for the obvious – I enjoy being scared. Whether it’s a jump scare that makes my heart skip a beat or a creepy concept that makes me wonder if something’s lurking in the dark late at night, that fear gives me a welcome jolt. Even as someone who’ll watch anything and everything in the genre, however, there’s always the concern of coming across a disturbingly bad movie. And that doesn’t necessarily have to mean disturbingly bad likeHalloween II or The Roommate, but rather films that are so off-putting or have concepts that are so alarming that not only is it impossible to enjoy, but it makes you unhappy.

Admittedly you can’t generalize when writing about what makes a person scared, so here’s a breakdown of the disturbingly good and disturbingly bad from a personal perspective.

Interview: Killer Women’s Hannah Shakespeare

Hannah_ShakespeareAs someone with a soft spot for action and tough female leads, the moment Hannah Shakespeare’s agent suggested she take on Killer Women, there was no discussion necessary; Shakespeare was in.  After going off to develop the narrative on her own, Shakespeare came back with a show centering on Molly Parker (Tricia Helfer), a female Texas Ranger. Even though Molly is clearly capable and a major asset as someone with the ability to understand why women kill, she’s still striving to prove herself in the male-dominated profession.

Collider Goes to the Set of ABC’s KILLER WOMEN

Killer_WomenThere have only been two female Texas Rangers in history, but now we’re about add a third – well, on TV.

ABC’s Killer Women stars Tricia Helfer (Battlestar Galactica) as Molly Parker, a feisty, determined Texas Ranger with a knack for figuring out why women kill. In the pilot episode, when a woman is murdered right in the middle of her wedding, Molly’s assigned to catch the culprit. Trouble is, it isn’t just about putting this high-heeled killer behind bars; Molly’s got to pinpoint her motives and those aren’t as cut and dry as the San Antonio Police Department would like to think. Hit the jump for all the details on our trip to the set.

Back in October, Collider got the opportunity to fly out to Killer Women’s Albuquerque set to discuss the show with Helfer as well as creator Hannah Shakespeare and stars Alex Fernandez, Marta Milans and Michael Trucco.
