Interview: The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’s Willow Shields

Willow_Shields_Jennifer_Lawrence_Catching_FireMost actors have to work their way up. Willow Shields, on the other hand, kicked off her career off at the top. She snagged the coveted role of Primrose Everdeen, Katniss’ little sister, back in April of 2011 and it’s been non-stop prepping, filming and promoting ever since. All the hard work paid off when The Hunger Games scored a $152.5 million opening week in March 2012 and now even more so as the sequel, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, just kicked off its run with a record-breaking $161.1 million.

In the second installment of the critically acclaimed franchise, President Snow (Donald Sutherland) vies to make Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) pay for defying the Capitol with her stunt with the Nightlock berries in the 74th Hunger Games. While Snow tries to destroy everything Katniss holds dear, Prim is there to pick up the pieces when she can, putting her healing capabilities to use and ensuring the fire within her sister continues to burn, giving the people of Panem a source of hope.

‘Catching Fire’: Your Guide to the Victors

catching_fire_character_guide_mainThe 75th Hunger Games is upon us and in honor of the third Quarter Quell, things are going down a little differently. Rather than reaping two contenders between the ages of 12 and 18 from each of the country’s 12 districts, tributes come from the pool of victors. You already know Katniss and Peeta, so meet the experienced killers who will try to steal their title when The Hunger Games: Catching Fire arrives on November 22.

District 1: Cashmere & Gloss

If you’ve seen The Hunger Games, you know what coming from District 1 means – career tributes. Katniss dubs Cashmere and Gloss “classically beautiful” siblings. When she was younger, she watched the pair dominate their games for two consecutive years, which would put the duo in their 20s. The entertainment value of their win streak made Cashmere and Gloss Capitol favorites and now that they’re back, they’re the ones to beat and they know it.

Quiz: In Which ‘Hunger Games’ District Do You Belong?

40123Wouldn’t it be just awful to be born in District 3 if you just weren’t naturally tech savvy? And what if you didn’t like water, but your parents hailed from District 4? Squeamish around animals? Hopefully your family lineage doesn’t plop you down in District 10.

Just in case modern civilization is ever decimated and replaced by a country that consists of 13 hardworking districts and one über-posh Capitol, you better know where you’d thrive. With The Hunger Games: Catching Fire due in theaters on Friday, November 22, Fandango teamed up with TheFandom.net to devise a personality quiz that’ll let you know which Panem district you’re best suited for.

‘Catching Fire’ Casting Update: Who’s In, Who’s Out, Who’s Left? (Updated 9/7/12)

Lionsgate really knows how to put on a show. Ever since the confirmation of Philip Seymour Hoffman’s casting as Head Gamemaker Plutarch Heavensbee last month, we’ve had a fairly steady stream of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire casting announcements. News of Amanda Plummer joining as District 3 victor, Wiress, arrived just about a week after Hoffman, and then came word of Jena Malone snagging the role of District 7 victor, Johanna Mason. While every casting addition is worth noting, when you’ve got a movie involving 24 different tributes on top of a number of other characters, it can be pretty tough to keep track of everyone. Lucky for those of you who aren’t wholly consumed by The Hunger Games series or maybe just haven’t read the books, we’ve got a rundown of where we stand on every role.

WHO’S IN

While we still haven’t gotten our Finnick, the past week has brought three new additions. Of the bunch, the first out of the gate was Lynn Cohen as Mags, the District 4 victor. Cohen has a very lengthy resume, but I’m embarrassed to admit, the only thing I instinctively recognized her from is her role as Magda in Sex and the City. Clearly no line can be drawn between that and someone who managed to win the Hunger Games, so that leaves us judging Cohen’s casting based on looks alone and as far as that goes, she’s definitely a winner. Mags is described as an “elderly woman” who’s possibly had a stroke, which left her with “garbled speech” on top of her District 4 accent. What makes her deadly and a survivor in her later years? Apparently she can make a fishhook with just about anything.

‘The Hunger Games’ Countdown: Predicting the Mystery Character in ‘Catching Fire’

Even though day one of production is reportedly less than a week away, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire casting seems to have stalled. The announcements poured in all through August until they peaked with the big reveal that Sam Claflin is set to play Finnick Odair. Finnick and Johanna Mason (Jena Malone) were two of the bigger new roles in need of filling, but we’re still missing quite a few tributes, most notably District 3’s Beetee.

Sure, we can continue the dream casting discussion and debate what famous faces would best suit the role, but how about a certain role that–well, we don’t even know what it is! Thanks to Lionsgate’s handy Catching Fire “Meet the Cast” Facebook page (which was up months ago but mysteriously came down this morning — perhaps for a redesign before more casting announcements?), we were all let in on a little secret – there’s a mystery character.

‘The Hunger Games’ Countdown: The Finnick Frenzy and Fandom’s ‘Hunger Games’ Awards

In Hunger Games: Catching Fire news, the District 4 victor, Finnick Odair, is certainly in the spotlight. As expected, now that we’re inching closer to shoot time, casting is underway and as one of the sequel’s most prominent new roles, not to mention a fan favorite, Finnick news and rumors are cropping up all over the place. However, rather than force you to run through blocks of text, check out this handy graphic detailing the Finnick frenzy thus far.

Now the big question is, what can we take from all of this? While I’d like to bet every single one of the actors mentioned above is in consideration for the role, being “in consideration” can mean a lot of things from perhaps being director Francis Lawrence’s top choice to merely having your name mentioned during a meeting. However, we did go through a very similar process with Katniss, Peeta, Gale and more last year and, in the end, all of the roles did come down to a name prominent during rumor time. Should Garrett Hedlund, Armie Hammer or one of the others snag the role fairly soon, despite what producer Nina Jacobson told theLA Times, I wouldn’t be surprised, but I’m still pulling for Hammer.

‘The Hunger Games’ Countdown: Francis Lawrence Under a Microscope

Ever since word got out that Francis Lawrence is taking Gary Ross’ place as the director of the Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire, we’ve all indulged in judging him based on whether or not we enjoy his previous films – myself included. While a director may get most of the praise should a movie play well or take the brunt of the criticism should it get banned, the fact of the matter is there are a lot of cooks in the kitchen when it comes to making a feature film.

The director is essentially the conductor, but that doesn’t mean every element of the filmmaking process lies in the palm of his or her hand. That being said, there’s really no judging Lawrence’s capabilities without both disconnecting his directorial work from the other creative entities, but then also considering the collaboration to a degree.

In order to better assess Lawrence’s potential as the director of Catching Fire, here’s a closer look at his work in his two most recent features, I Am Legend and Water for Elephants.

‘The Hunger Games’ Countdown: Dream Casting ‘Catching Fire’

In August of 2010 I posted “Daring to Dream: Casting ‘The Hunger Games’ Movie” on Cinematical. Not a single person I named was cast and I still stand by my choices to the point, but I must concede Gary Ross and Lionsgate did a much better job. However, that’s not stopping me from dream casting the sequel, Catching Fire.

The Hunger Games Vets

Of course there are quite a few characters from round one that will not return, but we’ve got quite the handful that are not only still in the spotlight, but consuming more of it. Catching Fireis Katniss Everdeen’s story just like The Hunger Games, so Jennifer Lawrence’s return is top priority. Sure this whole X-Men: First Class 2 thing put a little strain on the Catching Fireproduction schedule, but Lawrence needs to be front and center and the studio’s got to make that happen in any way it can.
