SDCC 2013 Interview: Divergent’s Shailene Woodley & Theo James

Shailene_Woodley_Theo_James_DivergentIt seems as though there’s this never-ending search for the next best thing in the young adult book-to-film adaptation world. What will trump The Twilight Saga? What will match the success of The Hunger Games? With the growing craze, there are loads of possibilities out there, but the one I’ve got my money on is Neil Burger’s Divergent.

At this year’s Comic-Con

Just before hitting Hall H for their highly anticipated panel, Woodley and costar Theo James who plays Four, Beatrice’s faction initiation instructor, sat down to run through the challenges of bringing Veronica Roth’s book to life, their hopes for the film, and even their own personal faction preferences.

SDCC 2013 Interview: Ender’s Game’s Gavin Hood

Enders_GameWhile the widespread success of young adult book-to-film adaptations like The Twilight SagaHarry Potter and The Hunger Games does facilitate some serious potential for a big-screen version of Orson Scott Card’s Ender’s Game, it also comes with the added pressure of ensuring that the Ender’s Game movie stands out.

Just ahead of the Ender’s Game San Diego Comic-Con panel in Hall H, writer-director Gavin Hood sat down to discuss making his mark in the YA-to-film realm and the challenge of doing the beloved book justice, but also noted one specific directorial decision that he hopes will help put the audience in Ender’s head.

SDCC 2013 Interview: Ender’s Game’s Asa Butterfield & Hailee Steinfeld

Asa_Hailee_Enders_GameBefore fielding rapid-fire Q&A questions at the Ender’s Game panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Asa Butterfield and Hailee Steinfeld sat down and had some fun telling us how they might fare if they ever really had to compete in the Ender’s Game Battle Room.

At this year’s Comic-Con

Butterfield and Steinfeld sat down to talk about being suspended in a zero gravity environment, and something called a “hamster wheel” but for people. Said Steinfeld:

“We were training in terms of strengthening our core and all this intense stuff… and we got there and none of it came in handy because you’re literally out there on wires, like, feet up in the air.”

SDCC 2013 Interview: The Mortal Instruments’ Jamie Campbell Bower

Jamie_Campbell_BowerIf The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones isn’t on your radar, after Saturday’s Hall H panel, it should be. Screen Gems unveiled an impressively suspenseful and rather brutal sequence from the film that culminates in an ideal payoff – Jamie Campbell Bower’s Jace Wayland nonchalantly stepping in to save the day.

At This Year’s Comic-Con

Just ahead of The Mortal Instruments’ run in Hall H, Bower sat down to talk about his string of good luck with young adult book-to-film adaptations, his issue with “smelly acting,” and loads more. He also dropped a hint about a certain Easter egg that’s worth keeping an eye out for when the film hits theaters on August 21:

“There’s an Easter egg, but I don’t know if I want to ruin it. Listen for somebody’s name who’s involved in the film … but is not a character. That’s all I can say.”

‘The Hunger Games’ Countdown: The Best of ‘The Hunger Games’ 2012

Best-of-The-Hunger-Games-2012I’d say 2012 is the year of The Hunger Games, but 2011 kind of felt like just that, too, and I have a feeling the same will be true of 2013, 2014 and 2015. We knew The Hunger Gameswould be big the moment the world was consumed by the first film’s casting craze, but now that the film is here and it’s very good, it’s even more likely that Katniss and co. will nestle their way into pop culture and our lives in general, and stick it out for the long haul.

With high hopes for the future, we pause to take a look back at a defining year for the franchise; the year The Hunger Games hit theaters and proved this really could be a series of the highest quality. Here are your Hunger Games highlights of 2012.

Biggest Bummer: Katniss’ Mother Is the Mystery Character: I don’t like kicking things off on a sour note, but ending a piece on a downer is even worse, so let’s get this out of the way fast. Kudos to Lionsgate for putting together a top-notch cast for Catching Fire, but what was with the mystery character? The studio sends the fandom into a tizzy, speculating a minor character is getting a raise, a new character is being introduced, or a Mockingjay character is enjoying an early debut, only to reveal that the mystery character is just Katniss’ mother? Not cool.

Everything You Need to Know About ‘Beautiful Creatures’ Revealed at New York Comic-Con

We may be in a Hunger Games lull, but it’s still all about young adult book-to-film adaptations and the New York Comic-Con spotlight is on Beautiful Creatures.

Stemming from Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl’s source material, the film focuses on Lena Duchannes (Alice Englert), a newcomer to the town of Gatlin. Lena meets and falls for Ethan Wate (Alden Ehrenreich), but as a Caster born into a family with a Dark heritage, he may not be able to keep her from going Dark during the Claiming on her 16th birthday.

Just before gracing the stage at their very own New York Comic-Con panel, writer-director Richard LaGravenese, producer Broderick Johnson and stars Alden Ehrenreich, Emmy Rossum, Thomas Mann and Zoey Deutch took the time to field some questions at a press conference. Check out the highlights from the event below.

‘Evil Dead’ at New York Comic-Con: Bruce Campbell, Wicked Gore and the First Image Revealed

Welcome to the Bruce Campbell show! Yes, this New York Comic-Con panel was all about the Evil Dead remake, but Campbell, his bright red jacket and his extraordinary sense of humor certainly commanded the spotlight. Campbell took the stage not as his iconic character Ash, but as Evil Dead’s producer, and was joined by the new iteration’s leading lady, Suburgatory’s Jane Levy, as well as the film’s director, Fede Alvarez.

Just like when Ash and co. first cracked open the Book of the Dead back in 1981, Levy’s Mia and her cohorts walk right into the nightmare, however, this time around, thanks to 20-plus years, advancements in technology and a darker tone, they find themselves in far more vicious and grotesque territory.

The Big Highlights

– Moderator Dalton Ross of Entertainment Weekly unveiled the film’s very first image, a shot of a creepy zombified girl crawling out of a cellar.

‘Carrie’ Remake Bloodies Up New York Comic-Con

Wouldn’t it have been cool if someone doused Chloe Moretz in pig’s blood, and out of rage she sent objects flying throughout the room and the IGN Theater erupted in pure chaos? Sadly there’s no firsthand account of Carrie’s rage to report from New York Comic-Con, but Moretz, Julianne Moore, producer Kevin Misher and director Kimberly Peirce did offer up a sense of what we can expect from the highly anticipated remake.

With roots in the Stephen King novel, Carrie features Moretz as the title character, a teenager with an overbearing mother (Moore) and abusive peers who loses it, unleashing the wrath of her telekinetic powers on the town.

The Big Highlights

– The teaser (online this weekis short and sweet, but has a nice energy and eeriness to it. The environment, effects and camera movement hint at the modernization of the material and a potentially flashier shooting style. Too short to confirm the remake is going to be worthwhile, but it at least puts it on the right track.

‘The Hunger Games’ Countdown: The Tributes Invade San Diego Comic-Con

Before diving into San Diego Comic-Con 2012, unless you were in a basement without reception or happened to be flying across the globe on a plane with no Wi-Fi, you’ve heard about the big Hunger Games: Catching Fire casting updates that dropped yesterday. We’ve got Christopher Plummer’s daughter, Amanda Plummer, on board to play Wiress and supposedly Sam Claflin and Tony Shalhoub are at the top of the list for the roles of Finnick and Beetee, respectively. You can read more about that as well as how close Melissa Leocame to snagging the role of Mags and the filmmakers’ plan to lock down directors for theMockingjay movies as soon as possible right here. Now for SDCC.

Isn’t it crazy to think about where we were this time last year? Everyone was scrambling to get ahold of a Mockingjay pin or teaser poster at the Lionsgate booth on the convention center floor. While that hasn’t really changed due to a constant influx of fans trying to get their hands on Hunger Games goodies near the booth, the film did get a Comic-Con upgrade. Alexander Ludwig (Cato), Dayo Okeniyi (Thresh), Amandla Stenberg (Rue), Jack Quaid (Marvel) and Willow Shields (Prim) all came to San Diego to meet the fans and sign some autographs.

To be honest, while watching fans line up for the signings, I was itching to jump into the masses and get one myself, but I had to be patient as I had a very special opportunity coming my way: The chance to sit down with all five cast members to discuss the film. Just the other day I posted a piece featuring Ludwig, Okeniyi, Stenberg, Quaid and Shields talking about their incredibly dedicated fans, experiences shooting The Hunger Games, top choices for the casting of Finnick and more. Today I bring you a little bonus, snippets from the interviews of the gang discussing their San Diego Comic-Con experiences and who they’d dress up as should they opt to hit the convention center in full costume. Who opted for the Hulk and Wonder Woman? The answer might surprise you …

SDCC 2012 Interview: Nikita’s Shane West

Before jumping into our interview with Shane West of “Nikita,” if you’re not fully caught up on the show, you’ve either got to heed this SPOILER ALERT or just embrace the influx of current story and character insight.

West is Michael, the object of Nikita’s (Maggie Q) affection. His feelings for her as well as his strong feelings against Percy (Xander Berkeley) compelled him to ditch Percy’s corrupt organization and adopt Nikita’s goal of putting an end to Division. The status of that goal? Complete. So now what? Run Division themselves, that’s what.

While promoting the show at San Diego Comic Con, West sat down to address season three’s trajectory, the flood of new villains, heading back to Division and more. Hear it all straight from West himself in the video below.
