The Worst Places to Be Stranded, According to the Movies

Gravity_1Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity doesn’t hit theaters until October 4, but the film’s trailers alone are powerful enough to convey the sheer horror of being lost in space. Until you get the chance to see how Sandra Bullock and George Clooney manage to survive with limited air and no connection to home base while 375 miles above the Earth, here are some other utterly terrifying places to get stuck…with little chance of getting out alive.

The deep blue sea (Open Water)

There are some major downsides to being all alone just about anywhere, but stranded in the middle of the ocean, with no boat, hungry, and exhausted? You’d think it couldn’t get much worse than that, but then poor Daniel and Susan realize they actually do have some company — sharks. Making the scenario in Open Water even more horrifying is that it’s loosely based on a true story.

The Best – and Worst – Movie Trailers of the Week

The-LEGO-MovieThe first teaser trailer for Disney’s Frozen will absolutely melt your heart, but it barely got edged out of this week’s top three by another animated trailer that packs a particularly exciting nostalgic appeal.

The Best Stuff

1. The LEGO Movie

If you consider yourself a LEGO kid, or perhaps even a LEGO adult, the first teaser trailer forThe LEGO Movie is an absolute winner. There’s the slightest sense that some of the humor might fall a little flat, but we’re only at the teaser stage so the reveal of the characters, the LEGO-piece animation, and those wonderfully nostalgic sound effects make for an excellent start.

8 Worst … Places to Get Stranded According to the Movies

As you probably noticed from my “8 Great Weapons the Movies Taught Us to Always Keep Handy” and “9 Ideas for the Next Great Final Destination Opening Disaster” pieces, I spend way too much time thinking about big screen kills. As much as I love coming up with these crazy ideas, the thought of getting caught in a real horror story is downright terrifying, particularly the idea of being stranded in a grim situation much like what happens to Liam Neeson in the upcoming release, The Grey.

It’s one thing to crash land in the middle of an icy tundra patrolled by vicious wolves with Liam Neeson by your side, but imagine getting stuck in one of these scenarios minus our favorite big screen survivalist.

SDCC 2011: All Good Things Must Come To An End … With A Giveaway!

I can’t believe it, but this is officially it; my coverage of San Diego Comic Con 2011 has come to a close. For five incredibly long days, the experience went by in a flash. The action was non-stop from the moment I touched down in San Diego and while it was extremely exhausting and probably one of the most trying working experiences I’ve ever gone through, it was beyond worth it.

So, what’d you think? Did you like my coverage choices? Were the formats I chose to report in effective? Do let me know because I’m thrilled to say, it looks as though I’ll be returning to Comic Con next year!

I do know I learned quite a few things for myself while out west. First off, I need to pack more food than a box of granola bars, or at least make time to pick up some items at a local supermarket. Between running around collecting coverage and then writing it up, there’s little to no time to grab a bite. Second, if I want to cover a panel, I’ve either got to get on line at about 5am or hunt down a press pass. I arrived for The Walking Dead panel over three hours early and the line to get into Ballroom 20 was already about 10,000 people long!

SDCC 2011: Friday Wrap Up And Photos

That’s that for Friday at San Diego Comic Con and I’m back at home base, well, the hotel. Today was a particularly busy one as I got a taste of exactly how long those lines for Hall H and Ballroom 20 can get. I thought I was jumping the gun by showing up three hours early for the 11:15am panel for The Walking Dead, but apparently about 10,000 people had the exact same idea, as the line stretched from the convention hall all the way down to the bay. Lucky for me, I was able to work some press related magic and get a seat, but for those other 10,000 people, they supposedly didn’t have a shot of getting in for another three panels.

Anyway, not only did I catch all of The Walking Dead, but a bit of the Torchwood: Miracle Day panel, too. Sure, I don’t watch Torchwood and had little to no clue of what the cast was talking about, but everyone seemed to be having a blast, especially the show’s stars, John Barrowman and Eve Myles. After that one wrapped Frank Darabont and the gang took the stage on behalf of The Walking Dead. The panel was packed with interesting information, but the highlight was definitely getting to see the season two trailer not once, but two times.

Review: Frozen

There’s something immensely enjoyable about trying to put yourself in the place of a horror movie character and imagining how you’d fair in their situation. What’s the best part of this fantasy scenario? It’s fake. But Frozen makes it feel so real that it’ll keep you from hitting the slopes anytime soon.

Dan (Kevin Zegers) and his best buddy Joe (Shawn Ashmore) frequently enjoy leaving their problems behind and spending time on the mountain. But this week, one of Joe’s problems came along for the ride, Dan’s girlfriend Parker (Emma Bell). Not only has she created a slight disconnect between the childhood friends, but she’s not the most talented snowboarder. Just as the slopes are about to close, the trio convince the chairlift operator to let them squeeze in one more run. Thanks to some miscommunication, the lift is shut down before they reach the top, leaving them stranded in the dead of night.
