The Worst Places to Be Stranded, According to the Movies

Gravity_1Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity doesn’t hit theaters until October 4, but the film’s trailers alone are powerful enough to convey the sheer horror of being lost in space. Until you get the chance to see how Sandra Bullock and George Clooney manage to survive with limited air and no connection to home base while 375 miles above the Earth, here are some other utterly terrifying places to get stuck…with little chance of getting out alive.

The deep blue sea (Open Water)

There are some major downsides to being all alone just about anywhere, but stranded in the middle of the ocean, with no boat, hungry, and exhausted? You’d think it couldn’t get much worse than that, but then poor Daniel and Susan realize they actually do have some company — sharks. Making the scenario in Open Water even more horrifying is that it’s loosely based on a true story.

Review: Gravity

Gravity_Poster1You may never get to fly off to space, but “Gravity” is the next best thing.

Sandra Bullock leads as Dr. Ryan Stone, a medical engineer about to wrap up her first shuttle mission. While making some seemingly routine repairs, her ship is hit by a vicious storm of debris. When the air clears, Dr. Stone and longtime astronaut Matt Kowalski (George Clooney) are the only two left. With no connection to Earth, it’s up to Stone and Kowalski to navigate the blackness and silence of space on their own in order to find a way home.

“Gravity” isn’t just an outstanding movie; it’s a groundbreaking achievement. Considering the odds of most of us leaving the earth’s atmosphere are quite slim, this film could be as close as you’ll ever get. Alfonso Cuarón takes the concept of transporting a viewer to a new time and place to a new level by combining pitch perfect visuals, absolutely outstanding sound design, and one particularly moving performance to make you feel what it’d be like to experience such a nightmare.

The Best – and Worst – Movie Trailers of the Week

GravityTwo release delays and some serious director drama typically isn’t a good sign, but the first trailer for 47 Ronin actually isn’t all that bad. A number of vivid and highly impressive visuals are enough to sustain the film’s first promo, but the display does raise concern that the final film won’t offer enough attention to story details. Regardless of where this one ends up, for now, 47 Ronin is nowhere near worthy of the Best Stuff, but keeps clear of the Worst, too.

The Best Stuff

1. GravityThe “Drifting” trailer is an unnerving and heart-wrenching display of isolation, but this honor goes to the “Detached” edition thanks to having that plus an absolutely incredible amount of suspense, too. On top of that, it’s tough to imagine Alfonso Cuarón spoiling one of the more riveting scenes in the film, so if he’s willing to unleash this as part of the promotional effort, just imagine the horror that’s to come in the full feature.

The Best – and Worst – Movie Trailers of the Week

Tom-Hanks-Captain-PhillipsAs someone who didn’t love Shaun of the Dead or Hot Fuzz, the fact that The World’s Endnearly creeped into the top three definitely makes it a trailer to note, but this week brought us three other trailers that are so above and beyond that nothing else even had a shot.

The Best Stuff

1. Captain Phillips

This trailer played well on the big screen at CinemaCon and turns out it’s just as powerful on the computer. This first look at Captain Phillips wins big by going the story route, pulling you in with its wildly enthralling inciting incident and then upping the stakes from there by using a string of suspenseful footage set to a rip-roaring pace. October 11 really can’t come soon enough.
