Life isn’t a fairy tale. Life requires life beyond loss and according to writer-director-producer Akiva Goldsman, that’s why we need fairy tales for adults like his new movie, Winter’s Tale. The book-to-film adaptation stars Colin Farrell as a thief named Peter Lake. Peter’s perfectly fine stealing to get by, but after crossing paths with Jessica Brown Findlay’s Beverly Penn, he abandons everything he’s known for something he’s experiencing for the very first time – true love.
Just ahead of the film’s Valentine’s Day debut, Goldsman, Farrell and Brown Findlay as well as co-stars Jennifer Connelly who portrays Virginia, a mother with an ailing daughter whose fate becomes intertwined with Peter Lake’s, and Eva Marie Saint who steps in as the older version of Beverly’s younger sister, all sat down for a press conference in New York City. So … according to the movie That Awkward Moment, there’s this point in a relationship called “The So” during which someone turns to you and says, “So …” and follows it up by asking a relationship defining question like, “Where is this going” or “What are we doing?” That absolutely can be an uncomfortable scenario, but for ladies who really know how to pick them, like Imogen Poot’s Ellie, the awkwardness doesn’t stop there. In That Awkward Moment, Zac Efron, Miles Teller and Michael B. Jordan play a trio of friends who make a pact to indulge in the single life together to help take Mikey’s mind off his divorce. However, shortly after making that pact, Jason spots Ellie. He may initially peg her as yet another brief fling, but soon realizes he can’t tear himself away. No one has ever had this effect on him and he’s determined to learn more – even if it means making quite a few awkward mistakes in the process.
Remember that time Miles Teller tried to hold Michael B. Jordan’s hand and then Zac Efron got within kissing distance of Teller? Now that was an awkward moment!
One day she’s taking out her enemies using rat poison in Dexter and the next, she’s trying to re-animate a rat Frankenstein-style in I, Frankenstein. In the Stuart Beattie-directed film, Yvonne Strahovski steps in as Terra, an electrophysiologist employed by Bill Nighy’s Wessex to figure out a way to bring the dead back to life. She manages to make some progress with the aforementioned rat, but it isn’t until Victor Frankenstein’s monster, Adam (Aaron Eckhart), comes back to town that Terra gets closer than ever to cracking the code of re-animation. It all began back in April of 2011 when Kevin Grevioux’s graphic novel I, Frankenstein was first snatched up for a feature film adaptation, and now, nearly five years later, Frankenstein’s monster is finally returning to the big screen.

When Mikey (Michael B. Jordan) gets hit with a divorce, Daniel and Jason (Zac Efron) decide it’s time to embrace the single life together. However, it’s easier said than done because when Daniel starts to fall for his wing-woman, Chelsea (Mackenzie Davis), he’s genuinely thrilled to start the relationship, but just can’t build up the nerve to tell his friends.
Dr. Frankenstein’s creature is back, but in brand new form. He’s still got the scars, but Aaron Eckhart’s Adam is a “lean, mean fitting machine,” kicking some demon and gargoyle you-know-what in the modern world.
Victor Frankenstein may have successfully put the pieces together to re-animate a creation consisting of 12 used body parts from eight different corpses, but there’s one thing Frankenstein couldn’t give his monster – a soul. Aaron Eckhart leads Stuart Beattie’s I, Frankenstein as Frankenstein’s monster, here called Adam.
Things got crazy at SXSW 2013. So crazy in fact, that it was impossible to cover everything and I opted to skip out on a little something called “Short Term 12.” Nine months later, I had seen the film a half dozen times and named it my second favorite movie of the year. But even though I missed out on a few months of celebrating the film’s prowess, now I can watch it as many times as I’d like because “Short Term 12” is due out on DVD, Blu-ray and digital platforms on Tuesday, January 14th.
