‘Catching Fire’: Your Guide to the Victors

catching_fire_character_guide_mainThe 75th Hunger Games is upon us and in honor of the third Quarter Quell, things are going down a little differently. Rather than reaping two contenders between the ages of 12 and 18 from each of the country’s 12 districts, tributes come from the pool of victors. You already know Katniss and Peeta, so meet the experienced killers who will try to steal their title when The Hunger Games: Catching Fire arrives on November 22.

District 1: Cashmere & Gloss

If you’ve seen The Hunger Games, you know what coming from District 1 means – career tributes. Katniss dubs Cashmere and Gloss “classically beautiful” siblings. When she was younger, she watched the pair dominate their games for two consecutive years, which would put the duo in their 20s. The entertainment value of their win streak made Cashmere and Gloss Capitol favorites and now that they’re back, they’re the ones to beat and they know it.

‘Catching Fire’ Set Photos, Plus: How You Can Win a Trip to the Set of the ‘Hunger Games’ Sequel

Hello, principal photography! September 10 marked day one of production on The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, and since then filming updates, set photos and other Hunger Games announcements have been pouring in.

Win a Trip to the Set!

The first big item that any hard-core fan above the age of 13 must note is a little contest. In honor of the start of production, Lionsgate revealed a video of director Francis Lawrence announcing the details of a sweepstakes that gives fans the chance to visit the Catching Fireset. In order to enter, you’ve either got to upload a 30-second video of yourself asking the cast a question and stating your district, or play The Hunger Games Adventures, which was just recently released for the iPad. Click here to check out the full rules and regulations, and catch Lawrence’s video announcement below.

‘Catching Fire’ Casting Update: Who’s In, Who’s Out, Who’s Left? (Updated 9/7/12)

Lionsgate really knows how to put on a show. Ever since the confirmation of Philip Seymour Hoffman’s casting as Head Gamemaker Plutarch Heavensbee last month, we’ve had a fairly steady stream of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire casting announcements. News of Amanda Plummer joining as District 3 victor, Wiress, arrived just about a week after Hoffman, and then came word of Jena Malone snagging the role of District 7 victor, Johanna Mason. While every casting addition is worth noting, when you’ve got a movie involving 24 different tributes on top of a number of other characters, it can be pretty tough to keep track of everyone. Lucky for those of you who aren’t wholly consumed by The Hunger Games series or maybe just haven’t read the books, we’ve got a rundown of where we stand on every role.

WHO’S IN

While we still haven’t gotten our Finnick, the past week has brought three new additions. Of the bunch, the first out of the gate was Lynn Cohen as Mags, the District 4 victor. Cohen has a very lengthy resume, but I’m embarrassed to admit, the only thing I instinctively recognized her from is her role as Magda in Sex and the City. Clearly no line can be drawn between that and someone who managed to win the Hunger Games, so that leaves us judging Cohen’s casting based on looks alone and as far as that goes, she’s definitely a winner. Mags is described as an “elderly woman” who’s possibly had a stroke, which left her with “garbled speech” on top of her District 4 accent. What makes her deadly and a survivor in her later years? Apparently she can make a fishhook with just about anything.

‘The Hunger Games’ Countdown: Minor ‘Catching Fire’ Characters Not to Forget

Johanna Mason? Check! Wiress? Check! Plutarch Heavensbee? Check! Clearly we’re well on our way to casting The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, but there are still a number of key roles that remain vacant, namely one of the most coveted new additions, Finnick Odair. Many have been eager to point a finger at Sam Claflin for the role, but until the studio confirms that the Snow White and the Huntsman star is indeed the top choice for Finnick, let alone thechoice, I’d advise assuming others could still be in the running.

Even while we continue to obsess over who could snag the coveted role until the filmmakers finally unveil their decision, we mustn’t forget there are a number of other Catching Firecharacters in need of casting. Thanks to this handy “Meet the Cast” chart on the film’s Facebook page, we know we have a Gloss, Cashmere, Brutus, Enobaria, Mags, Blight, Woof, Cecelia, Chaff, Seeder and an unnamed mystery character on the way, but what about some of those smaller roles that function more as unforgettable nuances in Suzanne Collins’ book and might not have deserved a spot on this chart?

Keeping with tradition and following in the footsteps of the Hunger Games version of Characters Not to Forget, the Hunger Games fandom now brings you a list of Catching Fire characters that we hope don’t fly under the radar, or not get the time in the spotlight they deserve.

Review: Snow White and the Huntsman

While I was determined to judge Snow White and the Huntsman and Mirror Mirror impartially, from day one, I always had an inkling of which of the two I’d prefer. However, it turns out, even with the advantage of a little bit of bias, Rupert Sanders still couldn’t trump Tarsem Singh.

In a darker twist on the beloved fairy tale, Snow White’s (Kristen Stewart) widowed father, King Magnus (Noah Huntley), marries the beautiful Ravenna (Charlize Theron) only to find out that she’s hell bent on gaining power, even if it means taking her new husband’s life. After Ravenna murders Magnus, Snow White is banished to the dungeon. Ravenna spends her years feeding off the young and innocent to maintain her youth, but when Snow White comes of age, the only way for Ravenna to remain the fairest of all if for Snow White to die.

However, just before Ravenna can end her life, Snow White escapes and is chased into the dark forest. Desperate to have her back alive, Ravenna strikes a deal with a huntsman (Chris Hemsworth) to track her down. Meanwhile, Snow White’s childhood friend William (Sam Claflin) is all grown up as well and upon hearing that she’s still alive, he vows to rescue her.

Review: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

At this point, the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, must only make due on two things, Johnny Depp starring as Jack Sparrow and recreating the world of the pirates. Well, franchise fans won’t be disappointed as director Rob Marshall and his team delivered just that. On the other hand, anyone looking for the slightest bit more will leave unsatisfied for the series’ fourth film, On Stranger Tides, has absolutely nothing new to offer.

After breaking out of prison, Captain Jack Sparrow (Depp) teams up with an old flame, Angelica (Penélope Cruz), to track down the fountain of youth. Turns out, Angelica is Blackbeard’s (Ian McShane) daughter and Blackbeard himself desperately needs the powers of the fountain so as to thwart a prophecy dictating his death. But before the trio can even make their way towards the mystical structure, they must first collect the tear of a mermaid as well as two silver chalices from aboard Ponce de León’s ship in order to unlock the fountain’s magic.

Meanwhile Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) is now in cahoots with the British government, employed by the King to claim the fountain for England. With the guidance of Jack’s now imprisoned first mate, Gibbs (Kevin McNally), Barbossa hits the open seas on a ship that sadly isn’t the Black Pearl, for the Pearl was destroyed during a battle with Blackbeard. Then there are the Spaniards who recently had the good fortunate of snatching up a man from the sea, a member of Ponce de León’s crew who should have died years ago. The Spanish King sends a fleet not only to find, but to destroy the fountain of youth so as to preserve humanity.
