Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity doesn’t hit theaters until October 4, but the film’s trailers alone are powerful enough to convey the sheer horror of being lost in space. Until you get the chance to see how Sandra Bullock and George Clooney manage to survive with limited air and no connection to home base while 375 miles above the Earth, here are some other utterly terrifying places to get stuck…with little chance of getting out alive.
The deep blue sea (Open Water)
There are some major downsides to being all alone just about anywhere, but stranded in the middle of the ocean, with no boat, hungry, and exhausted? You’d think it couldn’t get much worse than that, but then poor Daniel and Susan realize they actually do have some company — sharks. Making the scenario in Open Water even more horrifying is that it’s loosely based on a true story.

The Good, The Bad, and the Bogus: Modern Horror Heroines
Alexandra Daddario certainly made for a kick-ass heroine battling Graham Sutter in Bereavement, but can she take on Leatherface? Watching a slasher run around, chopping up helpless victims is almost always a good time, but the experience necessitates a strong leading lady. With a market currently oversaturated with sequels, prequels, reboots, and just a few original ideas, we’re left with a wide range of heroines – the good old charming fighters, the ones that are there to give the killer something pretty to chase and nothing more, and then there are those that land somewhere in the middle courtesy of an outlandish twist or wacky behavior.
Where will Daddario fall on the spectrum? We’ll have to wait until Texas Chainsaw 3D hits on January 4th to see, but in the meantime, check out the name these modern horror heroines made for themselves during their bloodbaths.

10 Items Movies Have Taught Us Not to Touch, Ever
In this weekend’s new release The Possession, poor little Em Brenek just has to buy an old box at a yard sale. Even though the thing clearly isn’t meant to be opened, Em insists and she’s left with creepy fingers popping up in the back of her throat. If only Em had watched a few more horror movies, she would have picked up on the telltale signs that something isn’t right about her precious little box. No, we don’t want to live our lives in plastic bubbles, but thanks to the genre we know that there are quite a few things out in the world that might be alluring, but are just not worth touching.
Infamous Videotapes
When legend has it that if you watch a certain videotape you’ll die within seven days of watching it, you might as well stay on the safe side and opt out of popping it into the VHS player. Nightmares, nose bleeds and incessant phone calls just aren’t worth it. If you’re so curious that you can’t bear to go on without catching what’s on this haunted videotape, better figure out if you’ve got the guts to make a copy and pass it on. But then what poor soul will you pass it on to? Good thing VHS players are just about obsolete!
