Review: Thor: The Dark World

The_The_Dark_World_Poster1“Thor: The Dark World” is simply Marvel’s most fun movie.

Way back when, Odin’s (Anthony Hopkins) father, Bor, supposedly annihilated a race called the Dark Elves, thwarting their attempt to shroud the universe in darkness using a weapon called the Aether. Trouble is, the leader of the Dark Elves, Malekith (Christopher Eccleston), and a few cohorts abandoned their race mid-fight and managed to escape so they could get another chance to see their plan through in the future. In present day, about two years after the events of “Thor,” Thor is reveling in the success of his efforts to bring peace to the Nine Realms. However, before the Asgardians can enjoy this universal accord, the Nine Realms align, portals open, and the Dark Elves return.

“Thor: The Dark World” is easily one of Marvel’s most entertaining films. It’s got action, adventure, heart and some of the best superhero movie comedy. There are some logic issues, but the film is such a joy and thrill that the pleasure of the illusion leaves no room for misgivings.

The Best – and Worst – Movie Trailers of the Week

Captain_PhillipsWe’re still well over a month away from the start of the New York Film Festival, but it’s already shaping up to be a remarkable event, going three for three in the trailer department. Just last week The Secret Life of Walter Mitty cracked the top three and now we’ve got two more NYFF entries with superb promos solidifying even more of the lineup as must-see material.

The Best Stuff

1. Captain Phillips

The true story of Captain Richard Phillips is profound in and of itself, but based on Captain Phillips’ new trailer, the feature version could have the performances, tone and suspense to elevate it to unprecedented levels. The piece stitches together the basics of the situation in a highly comprehensible and effective fashion, but the standout in this latest promo is its ability to humanize the enemy.

The Best – and Worst – Movie Trailers of the Week

A-HijackingOf course it’s a thrill to see Thor back in action, but for those who aren’t familiar with the source material and don’t know where the sequel plot stems from, more story details could have elevated Thor: The Dark World’s first trailer from banking on familiar faces to suggesting his next adventure is worth experiencing. However, the piece does offer loads of striking imagery and battle sequences, leaving both the top and bottom three positions up for grabs.

The Best Stuff

1. A HijackingLucky for A Hijacking, the Tom Hanks-starrer Captain Phillips isn’t due in theaters until October 11. Not only will it give the film a little room to breathe after its June 14 limited release, but there’s also a chance the Captain Phillips trailer won’t sneak in and steal this one’s thunder. If what was screened at CinemaCon ends up being the official Captain Phillips trailer, it’s good, but this one for The Hijacking is nearly equally as effective, showing the takeover in a particularly brutal and authentic light, making it tough to forget.
